Giovanna is a member of the Young Women of Color Leadership Council. Anyone who is involved in any type of social justice advocacy needs to recognize what they are fighting for. In the midst of working for something better, we are often sidetracked by what/whom we are fighting against. It is essential to know what is trying to limit us, stand in our way and obstruct our views of something better that could exist. My last two years on the Young Women of Color leadership council have reconstructed my mind to focus on what it is I am fighting for. I understand that as a member of this generation, youth are the only people who can fight for themselves. As a young woman of color, we are the only ones who can use our experiences to fight for ourselves. While there are allies in the process, it is us who have the passion, fueled by our unique challenges, that will drive our fight for a better future. Sexual Health and Reproductive Justice are two realms which young women of color who are able to, need to exercise their responsibility to make better. As a member of the population disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancy, in addition to other social plagues, I understand my work imperative. I have the rare and incredible privilege to be on the council; I am responsible. |

I’m Giovanna and was born and raised in Los Angeles, but currently (and proudly) call Ann Arbor, Michigan my home.
