Working with Youth
E Print

E is an online peer educator with YouthResource.

Hi! My name is E. Just E – like the letter! I am 19 and currently work for the mayor of Portland, Oregon, Tom Potter.

My activist work began the day I came out to my parents. Five years ago, I sat my Mom down on my bed, walked into my closet and after a few moments of her asking “what are you doing, what are you trying to show me? Get out of the closet” – I jumped out of the closet with a sign on my chest saying “I’m coming out.”

I have dedicated my life to giving youth accurate information about sex and STIs. I know that with the right information, they will make responsible decisions about their sexual health. I am constantly reminded about the incredible stigma young people, gay or straight, face. I know that when youth are given a chance to participate constructively, we can achieve great things.

Currently, I am working with the first of its kind Bill of Rights created for youth by youth. The City of Portland and Multnomah County have adopted this bill and I am working as a Youth Program Aide to implement the six articles of the Bill of Rights. My responsibilities involve researching what programs and services are offered to youth by each city and county bureau. My co-worker and I will report our findings and recommendations to the City Council. Hopefully, our work will help to engage youth in city and county government and ensure that a population that cannot vote is still heard.
